With more people than ever using their computers to purchase goods, on-line banking, stock market investments and services such as pay pal, the need for securing your personal computer from potential hackers has become paramount. Some of these criminals may be trying to "Phish" your personal information (send bogus links in emails in hopes you will give them information on seemingly legit websites), others may be trying to use your computer as a platform from which to attack other unknowing targets. And, others may be trying to install malicious programs on your computer to steal your personal information.

The following are some easy to use steps to help secure your computer.

1.Always make backups of important information and store in a safe place separate from your computer. Don't save important information in any email account. Print it out and delete the original email, making sure the original email doesn't sit in the trash bin either.

2.Update and patch your operating system, web browser and software frequently. If you have a Windows operating system, set your update options to automatic. This program will help you find the latest patches for your Windows computer.

3.Install a firewall. Without a good firewall, viruses, worms, Trojans, malware and ad ware can all easily access your computer from the Internet. Consideration should be given to the benefits and differences between hardware and software based firewall programs. Still redundancy is a good thing, so try to use a router with a built in firewall along with your PCs firewall and anti-virus software.

4.Review your browser and email settings for optimum security. Why should you do this? Active-X and Java Script are often used by hackers to plant malicious programs into your computers. While cookies are relatively harmless in terms of security concerns, they do still track your movements on the Internet to build a profile of you. At a minimum set your security setting for the “Internet zone” to High, and your “trusted sites zone” to Medium Low.

5.Install anti-virus software and set for automatic updates so that you receive the most current versions.

6.Do not open unknown email attachments. It is simply not enough that you may recognize the address from which it originates because many viruses can spread from a familiar address, and anyone can pretend to be someone you trust.

7.Do not run programs from unknown origins. Also, do not send these types of programs to friends and coworkers because they contain funny or amusing stories or jokes. They may contain a Trojans horse waiting to infect a computer.

8.Disable hidden file name extensions. By default, the Windows operating system is set to “hide file extensions for known file types”. Disable this option so that file extensions display in Windows. Some file extensions will, by default, continue to remain hidden, but you are more likely to see any unusual file extensions that do not belong.

9.Turn off your computer and disconnect from the network when not using the computer. A hacker can not attack your computer when you are disconnected from the network or the computer is off.

10.Consider making a boot disk on a floppy disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised by a malicious program. Obviously, you need to take this step before you experience a hostile breach of your system.

Finally, if you are using a wireless network, secure it by using strong encryption! If you incorporate these steps, you will ensure a safer, and more enjoyable on line experience

Sharing Microsoft Outlook Calendars is a great way for you to keep your employees, friends and even family up to date on what is going on in your life. Because Microsoft Outlook is a popular email utility, there is no better way to share your calendars than through this software. But, how do you share Outlook calendar information if you don’t have an Exchange Server?

In the past Net Folders was available in Microsoft Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000. Net Folders allowed you to share Outlook calendar information with other people through email and you could even run a mailing list if you wanted to. With Net Folders you didn’t even need to be using the same email system as your colleagues.

Unfortunately Microsoft discontinued and no longer supports Net Folders due to the software’s
instability which frequently caused Outlook to crash. If you were using Net Folders in the past, any information you placed in Net Folders is still available to you, but not to other users. Thus, users of Net Folders need to find a way that they can share their Outlook Calendars without an Exchange Server.

One option that you have is to use the Internet Free/Busy feature in Microsoft Outlook that allows you to see when people are free or busy. This feature was designed so that you could efficiently schedule meetings and events with employees, colleagues or any other users. But, there are a few downsides to this feature:
. You can only see if a person is free or if they are busy. You can’t see what they are actually
busy with and why, therefore having limited functionality in many settings.
Difficult to set up and to share with others.
Requires setup of an FTP server to share the information. You must share your
information through a FTP file server and you must specify the user rights. Setting up
and maintaining an FTP server requires an always-on Internet connection with a static IP
address, which goes beyond the capabilities of most people looking for a simple Outlook
calendar sharing tool.

If the Internet Free/Busy feature works for you and you understand how to set up and manage an FTP server, then simply refer to Microsoft’s website and instructions on how to properly set up and configure an Internet Free/Busy server at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;827775. However, what do you do if you still need something that is a little more user-friendly and that actually offers full-calendar sharing features?

Another option is OfficeCalendar (http://www.officecalendar.com) by Lookout Software, an innovative addin that allows users to share Outlook calendar, contact and task information without Exchange Server. This product is drop-dead simple to install and use, and it makes sharing your Outlook calendars, contacts and even task information as easy as it gets. You are also able to view, share, edit and create new calendars with your colleagues and other contacts. All you need is a copy of Microsoft Outlook. Plus, you are able to choose who you want to share this information with and who you do not.

The best thing about OfficeCalendar is that you do not need an Exchange Server to do any of this. You also do not need any special hardware or experts to set this up for you. It’s very user friendly and can be installed on virtually any Windows computer network making it great for offices and even home networks.

If you use Microsoft Outlook, especially newer versions of the software and if you were using Net Folders in the past, then you are going to love the functionality that OfficeCalendar brings your office or home. With OfficeCalendar you are able to take advantage of a number of rich and unique features that work with Outlook as well, including synchronization with your PDA or Windows Mobile device to your Outlook calendar, contacts and tasks that you use on your main computer system. This allows you to have a mobile office and keep your information up to date on all of your office devices.

Computers have become an essential part of our day-to-day life. No longer are they just a tool we use when at work. Virtually every household in the UK now owns at least one PC or laptop and many homes now have more than one. With the introduction of wireless routers and broadband a few years ago ‘PC Recovery’ have found that many people would now rather be without their television than their computer. A spokesperson for ‘PC Recovery’ said “Typical PC users these days will use their computer for a wide variety of tasks. From emailing their friends and family to booking cheap flights online. We have found many people will store all their photographs and music on their computer as well as any important documents such as a CV or letter to their bank”

With the increase in home PC usage it stands to reason that more and more problems are going to arise. “It’s no longer a case of just removing a virus or upgrading someone’s RAM” said the spokesperson. “Many families now have home networks with several computers and laptops involved. As well as wireless printers and network storage devices and they want to make the most of their hardware whether it is a laptop or a desktop PC.”

As computers are able to take care of more and more tasks for us computer engineers are finding themselves doing a wider variety of tasks than in the past. Apart from the obvious things such as fixing a broadband problem or removing a virus from a computer, they now find themselves doing things such as setting up home games consoles on the internet i.e Xbox 360 or PS3, or installing a customer’s mobile phone or MP3 player. “Times are changing” said the spokesperson. “And with it our engineers are finding they have to adapt and keep abreast of new technology and new advancements.”

Without doubt the most popular advancement in recent years would be the wireless network. Throughout the United Kingdom and in particular southeast England there are hundreds upon thousands of wireless hotspots, many of which are free. “If you drive into any town center in Essex or Kent you are now able to access the internet from many available hotspots” revealed the spokesperson “Libraries, fast food restaurants, cafes and even hotels are now only too happy to offer this service free of charge in order to encourage potential customers to use their facilities” The problems arise when people access private wireless networks that have not been secured. “This can cause a great deal of problems and security issues for the owner of the private network. This can potentially be very damaging as in the wrong hands this access could lead to bank details and personal files be extorted from the owner’s computers.

So while the new age of wireless is incredibly useful and makes it much easier for us to keep in touch with each other and indeed our online pursuits we should all take care and if necessary have our home networks checked by someone professional before it is too late. “We have seen too many people fall foul of stolen identity just by leaving their home network unsecured” said the spokesperson “So it does pay to have your system and network checked by someone professional and reputable every so often, even just for your own peace of mind.”

Color is just like a Porsche--There Is No Substitute
In anatomical illustrations you see the brain's large visual system, where the optic nerve is actually 25 times faster than our audio nerves (hearing). No matter which processing style you depend on, 90 percent of the sensory perceptions received by your brain are visual. This is undoubtedly why color-coding works even for Auditory and Kinesthetic Learners.

Color-Coding Your Calendar
Custom color-coding each entry is one of the biggest improvements in Computer Calendars. When your appointment window pops up for the details; You'll find a drop-down field option to choose which color you want.

Color-coding will reduce mis-reads by as much as 90%, even if you don't change anything else about your calendar's display.

One executive client codes his calendar with black for onsite meetings, red for travel, green for offsite meetings and blue for personal/family time.

I know soccer moms who color code for school, church, medical appointments, and family time. Truth is, they have just as many appointments to track as most executives.

Color-Coding Your E-mail
You can color-code your messages in almost every current e-mail program. You can do this by "training" your filters (sometimes called rules or screens) to recognize your clients or customers and make all their incoming messages appear in red.

Usually you'll find this function under Tools, and Options. Just fill in which e-addresses you want in what colors. You only have to do this once and it will work for you from then on.

My e-mail is set up to show all incoming messages from people I know I want to hear from in blue. Many of my clients set it so that any e-mail from their boss appears in red. Make color work for you - use it a lot in your office and on your computer too!

Color-Coding Other Electronic Files
It's not as easy to color-code folders in Windows Explorer as it is to color-code calendar entries or e-mail messages, but it can be done, at least in Windows XP.

First you need to get or make folder icons in different colors. (Try doing a search on "icon libraries" in Google.) Once you have some icons to choose from, right-click on the folder you want to color-code and select "Properties" from the list that appears. You'll see a "Customize" tab across the top of Properties window. Using this, you can put different pictures on different types of file folders, or choose a new icon for the particular folder you are modifying.

The icons or pictures should match your overall color-coding system, the one you are already using for your paper files, e-mail, and calendar. In the list on the left, the folders are named and color-coded in the same way as in the File Kits described below. You can, of course, choose an even simpler system, or a more complex one, depending on how many different computer files you have and how you want to be able to distinguish them.

This procedure is time-consuming (especially if you don't start when you first set up your computer filing system), but it can be worth it to the Visual Learner for whom file names and sub folders aren't enough.

No need to reinvent the organizing wheel. There are many program features that can help you, but be sure how you'll use it and where you'll put it. Otherwise you're just going to end up with a bunch of brightly colored folders and messages that you've piled more chaos on.

If you’ve bought a cheap computer before it’s quite likely that after a short while of using it, you noticed the speed at which it could perform tasks seemed to rapidly decrease. As soon as you got your favorite programs on it such as Itunes, Windows Messenger or Photoshop you began to notice that you’d be spending more and more time waiting for programs to open or perform simple tasks. And god forbid you have one of the latest versions of Norton Internet Security or a similar anti virus program. Then your PC would slow down to a fraction of the speed it appeared to work when you first set it up.

This scenario is all too common. Retailers offer these beautiful looking PC’s, packed with technical jargon, plus tons of free software you don’t want, don’t need and won’t use. They offer them with the latest operating system such as Windows Vista or Windows 7 and they also throw in a flat screen monitor all for not more than a few hundred pounds. Sounds great right?

The problem is if you buy a cheap machine like this you will end up with the above scenario. You may think “This machine has got 4gb of RAM, it must be good” But the problem is unless you really know your stuff about PC’s you will be fooled. RAM for instance is important and generally the rule of thumb is the more the better. But what a lot of people don’t realize is RAM runs at different speeds depending on the quality of it and the quality of the components around it. If you had say 4gb of cheap DDR400 RAM and 2gb of DDR2 800 RAM you’d be far better off with the second option. What a lot of people don’t realize is the retailers know how you think and know which buttons to press in order to get their sale. If you saw a PC advertised as Duo Core, 4 gig of RAM, 500gb hard drive, DVD-RW and some fandango graphics card you’d likely be blown away. The problem is these components in the cheaper options are likely cheap unbranded ones. The Duo Core processor is probably a very low spec, low speed one, the RAM is most likely a cheap low speed RAM, the hard drive is of the older IDE variety and the graphics card is just about good enough to play space invaders. Sad as it may be many manufacturers now spend more on the case than they do on the components within it. If it looks the part people will buy it. There’s nothing wrong with having a nice case but would you have the chassis of a Ferrari with the engine of a mini?

Generally more and more people are getting into a force economy. Buy a cheap PC. When it goes wrong just out of warranty or has ground to a complete halt a few weeks after buying it, just buy a new one and give the other one to the kids. This is just money down the drain.

You should reckon on spending around £450/500 on the PC alone (forget the monitor) to have a quality piece of equipment that will last and be a joy to use. These middle of the range PC’s are far more likely to be upgradeable to prolong their useful life in the future and the components are more likely to be a named brand with decent speed ratings.

If you use the PC for work then you will be far more productive with a decent spec one. Even if it’s just for home use, who wants to be sitting around for ages waiting for the PC to react to something or run a virus scan.

The long and short of it is you get what you pay for but paying too little can be a complete waste of your hard earned cash.

What was once confined to the school yard has expanded into cyberspace, and these days, cyberbullies are causing more than just hurt feelings. Studies suggest that more than 42% of kids have been bullied while online. With serious results in many cyberbullying cases, including suicide, it is a concept that definitely deserves the attention of computer users on a worldwide basis.

What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullies use various aspects of technology to threaten, harass, or embarrass other internet users. Victims are often teens or preteens who live in the same area or attend the same school district as the cyberbully.

On a fairly frequent basis, cyberbullies send e-mails, instant messages, or text messages to the intended victim’s mobile phone or computer. Cyberbullying can also include leaving hurtful messages on a victim’s blog. From threats of physical harm to willfully disclosing personal data and photos to many other internet users, the harmful behavior perpetrated by cyberbullies tends to defame and embarrass victims. The cyberbullies of today tend to be the victims of yesterday, and bullies and victims trade roles on a fairly regular basis.

Cyberbullying can occur directly or indirectly. In the case of direct bullying, one bully communicates with just one victim. The messages they trade back and forth are only between the two of them. In the case of indirect bullying, others are involved with the process. Often adults are involved, and few of the bullies know the victim. Whether they manage to get the victim’s IM account or blog banned or they encourage others to post horrible information about the victim, the danger is very real because so many individuals are ganging up on the victim. With more bullies comes more power and more damage.

Just One Example
On October 17, 2006, teenager Megan Meier committed suicide. Soon after opening a MySpace account, Megan had begun to correspond with an individual whose screen name was ‘Josh Evans.’ While the two spend some time corresponding, the tone of the correspondence changed dramatically in October. ‘Josh Evans’ sent several hurtful messages to Megan. The final one read, “The world would be better off without you.” Megan hung herself that evening. Federal prosecutors are currently considering charges of both wire fraud and cyber fraud against the cyberbully who called herself ‘Josh Evans.’

The Causes of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullies tend to be motivated by many different things. From anger at their victims to frustration with the world around them, cyberbullies often have a jumble of emotions that lead them to harass victims. Some cyberbullies even attack victims for entertainment or power. With so many aspects of technology at any given bully’s disposal, cyberbullying is neither difficult nor uncommon.

Unfortunately, experts don’t think all of the causes of cyberbullying are related to the causes behind traditional bullying. Studies have show that both the type of communication that occurs and the demographics involved with cyberbullying tend not to correlate with those of their offline counterparts, leaving lots of parents, school officials, and researchers in the dark as to the exact causes.

What You Can Do About It
The best way to handle cyberbullying is to prevent it from ever occurring. Educating potential victims and creating awareness campaigns can help to stop the process. Ensuring that both schools and parents are involved with internet use as a whole may also help to prevent it from occurring. Teaching kids to keep their information safe while online is another way to prevent cyberbullying.

If it does occur, it is essential that it be addressed immediately. While it may not be a case for law enforcement, getting the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and/or host site involved is probably a good idea. Keep in mind that every cyberbully attack is different, so helping the victim to clearly communicate the type of threat, the frequency of messages, the potential sources, and the nature of the threat will help to ensure that proper action is taken.

In some cases, law enforcement must be involved. Contact members of the police department if a threat of physical violence is present, if the material involved is obscene, or if physical harassment is taking place as a result of the cyberbullying. At times, civil prosecution may be an option as well. Should the victim’s rights be infringed on during the bullying, it is a good idea to contact an attorney.

Potential victims must know how to respond to a cyberbully should they encounter one while online. In case of an incident, the victim should:

Ignore the emails, messages, or postings that use harmful language.
Not forward bullying messages to others.
Ignore emails, messages, and postings from known bullies.
Block the addresses of known bullies.
Show the messages to trusted adults including parents, teachers, or counselors.

An increasingly serious problem in today’s technology based world, cyberbullying must be addressed on an ongoing basis.

Has your computer's video card died or do you just want to upgrade it to a newer, faster card? well, if you are lost when it comes to the inside of a computer, then here is an easy step by step installation guide just for you!

1. First things first. Determine whether you are going to use an AGP or PCI card. PCI slots are the most common in the PC now, and most newer computers have one AGP slot on the motherboard, which has a locking hinge on it, while the PCI slot(s) are usually brown and all look alike. Look at the video card you have in your computer now .. Hint: it will have the monitor cord plugged into it. If there is a little lock handle at the end of the slot, it's an AGP card, otherwise the slot is for a PCI video card. If you have an AGP slot, buy that kind of card if possible.

2. Pull 'er out! Well, before doing that, notice the screw that is holding the card onto the computers frame. Remove this, then gently rock the card out of the slot. Try to not touch anything other than the cards edges. Static electricity from your hands can damage the card's circuitry. IF you are removing an AGP card, be sure to pull the lock out before attempting to remove the card. Otherwise, you may pull out the card along with the motherboard and anything else attached!

3. Put 'er in! Now you can put in the new card in the reverse manner that you took the old one out with. Gently tho ... you don't want to damage your motherboard by pushing too hard. once it is inserted completely, anchor it securely down with the screw you took out previously. **Caution** If the card does not fit into the slot,make sure it is facing in the right direction. If you are sure it is right, check that the card matches the slots cutouts. An AGP card will not fit into a PCI slot, so make sure you have the right slot for the card.

4. Fire 'er up! Make sure the video cord is connected to the back of the new video card, then start up your computer. Along with your new card should be a CD with the new drivers for that card and most probably, so extra goodies. Install the drivers and any other program on the cd you want, then re-start your computer.

At this point you should have a working new video card with impressive new video display. If not, Check that the video cable is securely attached to the video card. Also, check that the video card is completely seated in the computer motherboard's slot. One other problem you may have is that the monitor itself may be too old to support the new video card. In that case, let me know and I'll write an article on how to install a new monitor!

Turning Point takes a common change as its inspiration, where the Nazis do somewhat better in World War II and invade the United States. But after playing it, it's not that nightmare dimension that I find myself dwelling on. I'm reassuring myself that somewhere out there in the multiverse there's one where Turning Point isn't complete rubbish.

For much of the five hours you'll take to complete it, you'll find that hard to believe. It manages to take one of the most explored popular genres - the Half-Life/Call of Duty-styled linear shooter - and makes a glorious mess of it at just about every stage.

Turn around...

Animation glitches? Technical errors? Performance problems? Perverse difficulty spikes? Haywire Al? Hey, take your pick. It even manages to find its own novel ways to be terrible. I can't even choose my favorite. The fact it refuses to go to a higher resolution than 1024x768? Its collision frames often being so misshapen that when you're forced to fight on Tower Bridge, you can't shoot between many of the girders? Or how about if you step too close to a button, you can no longer press the thing, forcing you to step back and forth until you find the sweet spot? Such a surfeit of unriches And, above it all, there's the nagging knowledge that if the team were given the months required to hammer out the problems and become all it could be, the resultant game would have climbed to the dizzying heights of mediocrity.

What heady heights it does manage to scale are neatly cribbed from its betters, making a half-hearted attempt at the linear-roller-coaster thrills of Half-Life 2, et al. The closest they get is the opening, where you're disturbed from working on the New York Skyline by the Nazi attack on Manhattan. Planes fly past, blimps fill the sky, people fall to their deaths - and there's a flicker of what the game wanted to be. It emerges occasionally later on - during the arrival at Tower Bridge (don't ask) and the storming of the White House - but it fails due to a lack of the sense of control which Valve and Infinity Ward bring to the gaming table.

A linear game is supposed to concentrate on tricking the player into not realizing it, with subtle pointers making the player naturally do what the designer desired. Developers, Spark Unlimited has managed to fail completely at this, as I found skipping back to the objective screen being the only way to work out where I was meant to go next.

Bar its setting - which takes a Return to Castle Wolfenstein-esque science-fantasy approach to the Germans - Turning Point does manage a couple of more unusual features. For example, you're able to climb obstacles and shimmy along pipes (Sam Fisher style). Also, if you get close to an opponent, you can grab hold of them, and either do an auto-kill or use them as a human shield. In certain (pre-planned) areas, the instant kill can trigger its own animation, like drowning the Hun in a toilet bowl or throwing them off a skyscraper. (An approach last seen in The Punisher). Even here though, it fails. The ability to climb some things when the game blocks passages with small piles of rubble just leaves it looking stupid. The grabbing, like much of the game, is somewhat twitchy - as far as I could work out, it's impossible to get hold of an enemy when they're kneeling.

If it wasn't for the abominable Soldier of Fortune 3 this would have been the worst shooter from a mainstream publisher in recent times. As it is, this is just an astonishingly poor example of the genre. A perfect storm of cynical derivative design and slipshod implementation, the only sensible reaction to Turning Point should be to turn away.
